Episode 5 – Utah’s defense makes a statement, BYU cruises to an expected victory. RSL down and almost out…

Show number five was great, and thank goodness for great college football. I was in Yellowstone National Park this last weekend and had to watch the games on TiVo, and let me just say that watching a game that you know beforehand your team dominates is pretty fun. There is nothing like a great, exciting, stressful finish, and your team pulls out the nail-biter on the last play of the game; that’s awesome. But watching a thrashing in progress and knowing the outcome is in your favor makes me feel like a Roman Emperor in the coliseum and I am rooting for the lions.

Utah’s defensive effort was exceptional, and their great play let to five interceptions. SDSU was certainly a step up from the competition level in their past two games, but the outcome was much the same. Utah’s defense – the line in particular – is really starting to come together. I think if they can get their injury questions answered they stand a chance to really make some noise this season. Now if only the offense would show a similar level of firepower: The O is doing okay, but not great yet.

BYU rolled to a ho-hum victory over USU, which was only exciting because Utah State got fired up in the second quarter and started to play with a little energy. It was BYU’s first shutout since 1999 and it was the first time USU had been shutout since last week. (It was, actually, the first time the Aggies had been blanked in three straight games since Franklin D. Roosevelt was in the White House – 1937.) Jason Beck played well in the starting role while John Beck continued to heal, and the Cougars looked every bit as dominant as Utah did last week. It’s setting up to be an interesting November 25th in Rice-Eccles Stadium…

RSL took a big hit to their playoff hopes and there were some interesting headlines, as well. I would go over more of them, but that’s what the podcast is for. I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise, after all.
