Episode 3 – A better week for the Utes and Cougars. A little something about RSL and Prep Sports.. even some headlines!

We locked up the third show like a shutdown corner on a true freshman wideout. Okay, maybe it wasn’t that good, but I think we both agree that we are starting to at least improve, if only a little bit. Zach’s mixing and downloading skills are being honed to a fine edge and I am saying fewer incorrect and stupid things than ever before! It’s a good time around the Utah Sports Cast.

One interesting thing about this podcast in particular is that Zach and I have some of our best conversations about sports over Instant Messenger when we are supposed to be working at our day jobs. We do work hard at our jobs, of course, but there is an occasional few minutes where we have an IM conversation in between all of the labor. After all, what true sports fans can help but want to break down the weekend action with their friends?

We did not have the opportunity to speak much about the mtn. Network and their broadcasts of the games during episode 3, but they are better than I was afraid they would be. (Any game at all is better than none… sorry Dish Owners! I guess the Mountain West Conference doesn’t really care about you.) That having been said, my wife hit the nail on the head when it comes to the production value: it’s just barely above the local high school telecasts. Now, I don’t expect them to be ESPN in their first year, and I think they are doing all right, but I would like to see some improvements before the end of the football season. (If nothing else, can you at least get the instant replays figured out? Please?)

We have mentioned our sponsor, ShieldZone, each week so far, but that’s because it bears repeating. Thanks again to them for their continued support! We highly recommend visiting their website at www.shieldzone.com and protecting your digital life with an invisibleSHIELD.

You will hear about the following stuff in the podcast:

  • Utah was impressive in their first home game of the 2006 season, but they should have been against Division 1-AA Northern Arizona. No disrespect intended to the Lumberjacks, who played very well in the first quarter and were worn down by Utah’s superior size and depth: Utah 45, NAU 7

  • BYU was even more impressive in their home opener against Tulsa. They worked over the talented, experienced Golden Hurricanes with an incredible one-two punch of Brown and Vakapuna coming out of the backfield. BYU 49, Tulsa 24

  • Real Salt Lake is still holding on to hope they can make the playoffs in only their second season in Major League Soccer. They need to catch a little luck and win some difficult up-coming games and hope some teams in front of them lose. It would also seem they have a few things to work out in the locker room, as well.

  • A few other points wrapped this up, including a few NFL headlines and some local Prep Football notes.

As always, we appreciate everyone who is listening to our show, and we would love to hear from you. You can reach us at comments@utahsportscast.com, or individually at zach@utahsportscast.com and nate@utahsportscast.com. Thanks again!
